Rockstar Games has revealed more details about Grand Theft Auto VI, confirming localized weather, ride-sharing-based fast travel and a map roughly twice the size of Grand Theft Auto V.
The upcoming game, set in the fictional US state of Leonida, will feature a redesigned weather system that allows different parts of the map to experience different weather conditions at the same time.
Rockstar vice president of art for lighting and rendering Owen Shepherd told Game Informer that the studio had re-engineered its weather system to make conditions more localized and persistent.
Weather will leave lasting effects
According to Rockstar, weather in GTA 6 will not simply disappear once a storm passes.
Areas affected by storms will remain wet and show environmental effects for some time afterward, adding to the game’s changing surroundings.
Rockstar has not confirmed whether extreme weather events such as hurricanes will directly affect gameplay, but the company has highlighted the increased level of environmental detail built into the new system.
Biggest GTA map yet
Rockstar also confirmed that GTA 6 will feature the largest map it has created for a game.
The studio says the world is approximately twice the size of GTA V and will be divided into six main regions:
- Leonida Keys
- Grassrivers
- Port Gellhorn
- Ambrosia
- Mount Kalaga National Park
- Vice City
The developer says the map has been designed with greater detail both inside and outside buildings, with a much larger number of accessible interiors and densely populated environments.
Rockstar head of development Aaron Garbut said the studio focused on details ranging from rooftops and alleys to building interiors to make the world feel more cohesive.
Ride-sharing will double as fast travel
One of the newly confirmed gameplay features is a fast-travel system based around ride-sharing.
Players will be able to use rides to move around the large map while potentially interacting with random non-player characters during the journey.
The game will also feature the return of Snapmatic, its fictional social media platform, allowing players to scroll through in-game content.
More animals and side activities
Rockstar has also confirmed a wide range of activities outside the main storyline.
Players will be able to track animals for rare hunts, with the game featuring nearly 200 animal species.
Other activities include scuba diving, kayaking and visiting the gym, among various other side activities.
GTA 6 release date
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for digital release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Rockstar is also preparing physical products and a collector’s edition, although the announced collector’s edition does not include a copy of the game.
A physical soundtrack is also planned, with CD and vinyl editions available for pre-order.
