Meta has introduced a new tool that allows businesses to use AI agents to handle much of the setup and management of their WhatsApp Business messaging services.
The company announced the WhatsApp Business Tools MCP on Tuesday alongside new AI-focused subscription plans.
The new system uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect AI coding agents, including Claude, Cursor, Codex and ChatGPT, with the WhatsApp Business Platform.
AI agents take over setup tasks
Previously, developers had to switch between several Meta tools and services, including the Developer Console, Business Manager, API documentation and their coding environment to configure WhatsApp Business messaging.
With the new MCP server, businesses can instead describe what they want to set up through their preferred AI agent.
The agent can handle tasks such as creating a WhatsApp Business account, adding and verifying a phone number and registering the account for access to Meta’s Cloud API.
It can also help review the business’ Terms of Service requirements and identify issues that could prevent the setup from being completed.
Templates, testing and troubleshooting
Meta said businesses can also use AI agents to create messaging templates based on natural-language descriptions or modify existing templates.
The agents can test messages and webhooks and monitor configuration issues involving areas such as payment methods, Business Verification and Terms of Service requirements.
This could allow businesses and developers to identify problems that may otherwise go unnoticed during the setup process.
Meta expands MCP tools
Meta’s WhatsApp Business Tools MCP joins the company’s existing MCP tools designed to help developers work with its social technologies.
The company also offers the Meta Social Technologies MCP, which can help developers discover API endpoints, search documentation and troubleshoot errors during development.
MCP is increasingly being adopted by technology companies to allow AI agents to interact with their platforms and services.
Companies including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, Google and Microsoft have also introduced MCP servers or related tools for AI-driven workflows.
