US President Donald Trump has expressed concern over rising tensions between Iran and Israel, asking both countries to halt further strikes and return to dialogue.
Speaking on the issue, Trump said the United States is close to reaching a final agreement with Iran. He stated that a deal was near completion and was due to be signed, but recent developments disrupted the process.
Trump said he does not want the current escalation to undermine negotiations, adding that he will speak to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and ask him not to carry out any retaliatory strike.
He warned that if Israel responds with more attacks, the conflict could continue for years and further destabilise the region.
According to the remarks attributed to Axios, Trump said he would call Netanyahu immediately and tell him not to retaliate, stating that both sides had already exchanged strikes and further action was not required.
He added that Iranian missile strikes had not caused casualties and urged restraint, expressing hope that Israel would avoid further military response.
Iran, according to the report, launched missile strikes, which Trump termed as “enough”, while stressing the need for both sides to step back.
