OpenAI has expanded its AI coding assistant Codex to mobile devices, allowing users to manage development workflows directly through the ChatGPT app on iOS and Android.
The move comes as competition intensifies in the AI coding space, with rivals like Anthropic rapidly rolling out similar agentic coding tools.
Codex now available on mobile
OpenAI announced on Thursday that Codex integration is now available in preview mode across all ChatGPT plans on iOS and Android devices.
According to the company, users can now monitor and manage Codex live environments remotely from their phones, making it easier to stay connected to coding tasks while away from desktop systems.
“This is more than the ability to remotely control a single task or dispatch new tasks to your computer,” OpenAI said in a statement.
The company added that users can work across multiple threads, review outputs, approve commands, switch AI models, and even start new workflows directly from their smartphones.
OpenAI expands Codex features
The latest mobile rollout follows several recent updates aimed at making Codex more autonomous and accessible.
Last month, OpenAI introduced background execution for Codex in desktop environments, allowing the AI tool to handle various coding tasks independently.
Earlier this month, the company also launched a Chrome extension that enables Codex to operate within live browser sessions.
These additions signal OpenAI’s broader push to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing AI-assisted software development market.
The competition in the AI coding sector has been intensifying between OpenAI and Anthropic over the past year.
In February, Anthropic introduced “Remote Control” for Claude Code, enabling users to monitor coding tasks remotely in a similar way.
Anthropic’s Claude Code has steadily gained popularity among businesses and developers, particularly for its coding and automation capabilities.
The rapid rollout of new features from both companies highlights the growing battle over which AI coding assistant will dominate the market.
While OpenAI’s Codex and Anthropic’s Claude Code remain widely used among developers and tech professionals, both firms continue to compete aggressively by introducing more advanced autonomous coding features.
