China expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to recent remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on China’s Taiwan region, urging Japan to deeply reflect on its wartime history and strictly adhere to the one-China principle.
At a regular press conference, State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Chen Binhua said there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. He said Takaichi’s comments about Taiwan seriously violate the one-China principle and constitute gross interference in China’s internal affairs.
“We express strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition,” Chen said, adding that the Chinese Foreign Ministry has lodged solemn representations and strong protests with the Japanese side.
Chen stressed that Japan bears historical guilt toward the Chinese people over the Taiwan question.
“During its 50-year colonial rule over Taiwan, Japan committed countless atrocities. Eighty years ago, China defeated Japanese aggressors, restored Taiwan, and ended Japan’s occupation and plunder. Eighty years later, anyone attempting to challenge China’s core interests or obstruct national reunification will face firm opposition from the Chinese government, the Chinese people, and the Chinese military,” Chen said.
The spokesperson urged Japan to reflect deeply on history, adhere to the one-China principle and the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan, and honor its political commitments on the Taiwan question.
Chen also warned Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party authorities that any attempt to rely on external forces to separate Taiwan from China is doomed to fail.
