As temperatures drop and weather patterns shift across Pakistan, the air quality in Lahore and Karachi has deteriorated to hazardous levels, raising serious health concerns.
According to the latest global air quality rankings, Lahore has topped the list of the world’s most polluted cities, while Karachi has secured the fourth position.
Lahore’s air declared severely hazardous
Environmental monitoring agencies have declared Lahore’s air severely polluted and dangerous to human health. The city recorded an alarming particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration of 251 micrograms per cubic meter, far exceeding the World Health Organization’s safe limit.
Health experts warn that such high levels of fine particulate matter can trigger respiratory diseases, allergies, and other chronic conditions, especially among children and the elderly.
Karachi’s air quality also deteriorates
Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city and commercial hub, is also struggling with severe air pollution. The particulate matter concentration in Karachi’s air has reached 195 micrograms per cubic meter, earning it the fourth spot in the list of the world’s most polluted cities.
Global pollution rankings
According to the global pollution index, Delhi is currently ranked second, while Baghdad stands at third, making Lahore, Delhi, and Baghdad the top three cities facing critical air quality levels.
