Internet users across Pakistan are expected to experience slow speeds and partial disruptions today (October 14) as repair work begins on a major submarine cable system.
According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), the International Cable Consortium has announced a scheduled repair of a repeater installed in the submarine cable, which may affect connectivity between 11am and 6pm, with some work possibly extending late into the night.
A PTCL spokesperson confirmed that during this maintenance window, internet users may face difficulty accessing websites and social media applications, particularly on mobile data networks.
International maintenance work to begin at 11am
The PTCL spokesperson stated that the submarine cable repair will commence at 11am on October 14 and is expected to continue for around 18 hours. The company noted that during this period, customers may encounter intermittent connectivity issues or slow internet speeds.
The repair involves a repeater, a critical component that helps amplify signals transmitted through undersea cables connecting Pakistan to the global internet infrastructure.
Apology issued for temporary inconvenience
Acknowledging user frustration over the slowdown, PTCL extended an apology to customers for the temporary inconvenience. “We sincerely regret any disruptions and thank users for their patience as essential maintenance is carried out to ensure network stability,” the spokesperson said.
Social media access impacted
Users across the country have reported difficulties uploading and accessing Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and other social media platforms due to slower internet speeds. The issue, PTCL explained, is a direct consequence of ongoing technical repairs in the international cable system.
Telecom operators and internet service providers have also confirmed network congestion in some areas, particularly affecting mobile data services.
Connectivity expected to normalise after completion
PTCL reassured customers that full internet connectivity would be restored as soon as the repair work is completed and the international link resumes normal operations.
“The maintenance activity is part of regular global network upgrades, and our teams are working closely with international partners to minimize user impact,” PTCL’s statement added.
