China has voiced strong disappointment and regret over the United States’ repeated use of its veto power in the UN Security Council, which has hindered effective international responses to the Gaza crisis.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly debate on the use of vetoes on Wednesday, Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, highlighted that the U.S. veto on the September 18 draft resolution concerning Gaza was a major setback.
“If it were not for the United States’ repeated abuse of the veto, the Security Council’s response to the Gaza crisis would not have been so inadequate,”Fu said.
Nearly two years into the Gaza conflict, Fu noted, the situation has resulted in alarming civilian casualties and a severe humanitarian catastrophe, “undermining the bottom line of human conscience and international rule of law.” He stressed that international calls for a ceasefire have been consistently blocked by the U.S., which continues to shield Israel.
Ambassador Fu urged Israel to immediately halt all military operations in Gaza and abandon plans to take over Gaza City, emphasizing that military means are not a path to lasting peace.
Fu also condemned the ongoing humanitarian crisis under the man-made blockade, stating that the weaponization of aid, militarization of aid distribution, and attacks on civilians and humanitarian workers are unacceptable. He added that Israel, as the occupying power, must fully restore humanitarian access and support UN and other agencies’ relief efforts.
Fu further reiterated China’s commitment to the two-state solution as the only viable way to resolve the Palestinian issue. Both Gaza and the West Bank, he said, remain integral parts of Palestinian territory, and post-conflict governance must respect the principle of Palestinians governing Palestine.
The ambassador called on the international community to take concrete, irreversible actions to safeguard this framework and reject unilateral moves undermining it.
“China stands ready to work with the international community to make unremitting efforts to put an end to the hostilities in Gaza, alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe, implement the two-State solution, and ultimately achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Palestinian question,” Fu concluded.
