Netflix is under fire in Australia after announcing another round of subscription price hikes, sparking anger among long-time users and calls for a boycott.
New netflix prices in Australia
From late September, the streaming giant increased rates across all plans:
Basic with ads: up by $2
Standard ad-free: up by $2
Premium: up by $3
Account sharing fee: up by $1
Subscribers shared screenshots of emails confirming the new charges, with one message showing monthly fees rising to $28.99 from September 25, 2025.
Angry users threaten boycott
The announcement triggered widespread backlash online. Many subscribers vented frustration, saying the repeated hikes offered no added value.
“We’re going to witness piracy by the likes never seen before,” one user wrote.
Another subscriber who had been with Netflix for nine years said they finally cancelled: “Saw this yesterday and cancelled my membership.”
A third argued: “Corporate staff keep raising prices with no increase in what they offer. Only voting with your feet matters.”
Netflix responds to criticism
A Netflix spokesperson defended the changes, saying the platform provides a range of plans to suit different needs and occasionally raises prices when new features or content are added.
However, critics say the streaming service is becoming increasingly unaffordable, especially as competitors like Disney+, Prime Video, and Stan expand their Australian offerings.
The backlash has raised questions about Netflix’s future in Australia, with some analysts warning that loyal customers may permanently leave the platform.
Once seen as the default streaming service, Netflix now faces a fragmented market where users can easily switch to rivals—or return to piracy.
