India has officially grounded its fleet of MiG-21 fighter jets after 62 years.
According to the Indian media reports, a formal decommissioning ceremony will take place at the Chandigarh airbase on September 16. The MiG-21, once considered the backbone of the Indian Air Force, gained notoriety over the decades for its high accident rate.
Often referred to as the “flying coffin”, the aircraft has been involved in numerous crashes, with over 200 pilots losing their lives in related incidents.
Despite its record, the MiG-21 served India through several key military operations and remained in service far beyond its intended lifespan.
