Torrential monsoon rains and flash floods continue to cause devastation across Pakistan. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has released a report detailing the casualties and damages caused by the ongoing downpours and flooding.
According to the NDMA, 54 people were killed and 227 injured in Punjab alone over the past 24 hours due to rain-related incidents.
Between June 26 and July 17, a total of 178 fatalities and 491 injuries have been reported across the country. Punjab remains the worst affected, with 103 deaths and 385 injuries. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 38 people lost their lives and 57 were injured, while 20 deaths and 40 injuries were reported in Sindh. Balochistan recorded 16 fatalities and 4 injuries, and Azad Kashmir saw 1 death and 5 injured.
Between July 16 and 17, heavy rains lashed major cities of Punjab, including Rawalpindi, Jhelum, and Chakwal, causing rivers and streams to swell dangerously.
In Rawalpindi, 255 millimeters of rain fell within 15 hours, triggering alarms as the water level in the Nullah Lai reached dangerous heights. In Chakwal, a cloudburst led to 423 millimeters of rainfall, causing a dam embankment to collapse.
Thousands of electricity consumers in Rawalpindi, Jhelum, and Chakwal were affected as flash floods swept away transformers, power poles, and transmission lines. The dam breach submerged dozens of localities, crippling daily life.
In Chakwal, 22 small dams overflowed due to the heavy rains, while the collapse of the Panwal dam unleashed a dangerous flood wave. Two vehicles and three people were swept away; two individuals were rescued, but one remains missing.
